About Paige Mortensen

I have always had an inner need to create and have explored colour and design in many forms. My art explorations began in earnest in 2011 when I enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan’s Certificate in Art and Design. My initial exposure to the ancient medium of encaustic art was through a family connection in New Zealand. The vibrant colours and luminous qualities of the waxes are fascinating and I needed to explore its capabilities for myself. What could be more fun than melting the waxes and then opening oneself to the surprises that unfold in the process of creating with these wonderful, rich colours? Quite possibly for me the answer is watercolour batik. This is a process of combining wax and watercolour, layer upon layer on Ginwashi paper, working from lights to darks. The final step is to iron off the wax and watching the end result appear. It is always an exciting moment for me!

Earlier this week we took down my show from Hues Art Supply.  I really enjoyed preparing for the show, visiting with those who came to the reception and hearing comments from those who stopped by later in the month.  Thank you!

If you haven’t driven by Hues at night I recommend you do.  They project the images of the current show on the windows.  Looks great in person!

It was also exciting to learn that these three pieces found new homes!  Thank-You to those who purchased them.  Enjoy!

Showtime Excitement!

This has been a very exciting month for me!  On February 2nd Paul and Lana at Hues Art Supply did a fantastic job of hanging my work for the show that will be up there all month.  Thanks!

Saturday, February 7th was the show reception.  I am honoured by the number of people who came to show their support, learn about my process and look at my art.  Thank-you everyone for being there!

Paige Mortensen Hues Show 2015

There just wasn’t enough time to spend with all the people who came but I really enjoyed the support of family, short visits with old friends, meeting new people, sharing my watercolour batik process and learning from others about their experiences with batik.

If you didn’t make it to the reception please stop in at Hues sometime in February and have a look. (It is on the corner of Taylor St and Lorne Ave here in Saskatoon)

Thanks for being interested!

New Beginnings

Welcome to my new website!

One of my favourite books is “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-brainers Will Rule the Future” by Daniel Pink.  I read back when I was working as a Business Manager in a non-profit organization.  At that time I was busy with accounting, databases and assorted details.  Time passed and things change. In 2011 I was really feeling a need to regain some balance in life and  enrolled part time in the University of Saskatchewan’s Certificate in Art & Design (USCAD) program.  It didn’t take long before I was fully immersed in right brain activities and left my Business Manager role.

Since I graduated from the USCAD program in 2014 I have been immersed in art which has been wonderful!  The pieces are almost ready for my show next month and I have been focussed on creating this new web presence, and that has been great too!

My eyes and head hurt and yet I have come full circle to a lot of analytical thought.  I realize though that it is the creative thinking that brings the understanding to the analysis.  It is applying the information creatively to create the outcome I am looking for that really matters.

I am thankful for this balance!

I hope you take some time to poke around here and let me know what you think of the new look.
